James Barron was commissioned lieutenant 9 March 1798 in United States Navy and promoted to captain in 1799. He served in the Mediterranean fleet during the war with Tripoli. A commodore by 1807, he was in command of the ship Chesapeake which surrendered to the Leopard. Barron was court-martialed and suspended from service for five years.
